Buff & Blue improve to 22-7 on season
MERION STATION, Pa. - Sierra Lange tossed the fifth no-hitter in GW softball history on Saturday as part of a convincing doubleheader sweep of Saint Joseph's.
In an 8-0 run-rule victory to start the day, Lange hit a batter with two outs in the opening inning before retiring the last 13 batters she faced in the program's first no-hitter since the 2018 season.
GW kept the bats rolling in the second game to claim a 16-6 victory in six innings and complete a sweep of the non-conference twin bill vs. an A-10 foe. Jenna Cone and Jessica Linquist both went deep twice after Faith Weber pulled the feat in the opener.
The Buff and Blue have now won 17 of their past 18 games to improve to 22-7 overall.
GW 8, Saint Joseph's 0 (5 innings):Â Weber ensured Lange took the circle with a lead by blasting a first-inning grand slam. It was the graduate student's second grand slam of the season and the third of her career.
The Colonials tacked on single runs in the second and third before Weber went deep again in the fifth with a two-run shot to set the final margin.
It's the second time this spring Weber has posted a two-homer, six-RBI performance after also doing it in a win at Mount St. Mary's on March 7.
Weber's power helped the Buff and Blue rack up their eight runs on just six hits. Linquist and Alexa Williams both scored twice in the victory.
Meantime, Lange plowed through the SJU lineup, making history in her 12th win of the season. The redshirt junior from Plano, Texas, struck out six in the five-inning no-hitter.
GW 16, Saint Joseph's 6 (6 innings):Â The Hawks took the lead in game two with a five-run first inning, but the Buff and Blue simply slugged their way to another run-rule triumph.
The visitors scored in every inning but the third, rolling up 16 runs on 16 hits with eight of them for extra bases.
Cone and Linquist led the power surge, highlighted by their back-to-back homers in the third inning.Â
Linquist equaled a career high with five RBIs and scored four times, while Cone's two long balls gave her a team-high 11 this season and 67 for her career.
Lange followed up her pitching excellence with a sterling offensive performance, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored.
Alexa Williams also went deep, extending her hitting streak to 14 games in the process, while Alessandra Ponce had three hits and three RBIs.
Megan Osterhaus was credited with her second win of the season after pitching two scoreless innings in relief.
UP NEXT:Â GW heads to Saint Louis next weekend for a four-game Atlantic 10 series over two days.
