Cone homers twice in win
ST. LOUISÂ - After waiting out a lengthy rain delay, GW softball opened its weekend Atlantic 10 series at Saint Louis on Saturday evening with a doubleheader split at Billiken Sports Center.
The Billikens came from behind to win the opener, 7-5, before the Buff and Blue bounced back from their first conference loss of the spring to take the nightcap, 9-2.
In the victory, Jenna Cone launched a pair of home runs and drove in six runs.
GW 9, Saint Louis 2:Â The Colonials broke open the second game with a seven-run fourth inning to move to 13-1 in A-10 play.
The contest was scoreless before GW sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth, scoring all seven runs on a pair of homers from Faith Weber and Cone.
Weber helped her own cause, starting the scoring with a long three-run home run to center field that brought home Olivia Vinyard and Alexa Williams.
Hannah Eslick, Maggie Greco and Amber Lotz recorded consecutive hits to load the bases, setting up Cone's grand slam over the right-field wall to make it 7-0.
After SLU scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, Cone answered in the sixth, again going the opposite way with a two-run shot to extend the lead to 9-1.
Weber's home run was her 10th of the season and the team's 45th this spring to set a program single-season record. The graduate student from New Egypt, N.J., leads the club with 38 RBIs.
Cone hit her second grand slam of the season and the fifth of her career. The graduate student from Trabuco Canyon, Calif., now has four multi-home run efforts this season. She has a team-high 13 long balls this season and 69 for her career.
Cone, Weber, Williams and Sierra Lange recorded two hits apiece in the victory, while Jessica Linquist walked twice and scored twice.
Weber cruised in the circle, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits in her first seven-inning complete game of the season. She struck out six while improving to 9-1 on the season.
Saint Louis 7, GW 5:Â The Buff and Blue built a four-run lead in the first game before the Billikens scored six times in their final two at-bats to take the victory.
Alessandra Ponce helped put the visitors in front. The senior from Henderson, Nev., drove in a first-inning run with a sacrifice fly and then smashed a two-run home run in the third inning that made it 4-0.
After SLU got on the board in the bottom of the third, GW restored the four-run cushion with Lange scoring from second on a two-out error.
The Billikens closed strong, though. The home side plated two runs in the fifth and then four more in the sixth. They tied it on Allie Herron's two-run homer in the sixth and then went ahead for the first time on a sac fly from Sadie Wise before tacking on an insurance run on Gabbie Kowalik's two-out RBI single
Amber Lotz (single) and Linquist (walk) reached to start the seventh, but the Colonials were unable to complete a rally of their own.
Ponce's long ball was her eighth of the season to set a career high, and she drove in three runs in the contest.
Linquist reached three times with a double and two walks, while Lotz recorded a pair of hits with a run scored.
Lange went the distance in the circle, matching a season high with 10 Ks.
