Softball Starts Home Slate with Sweep
WASHINGTONÂ - GW softball kicked off its 2021 home slate in style on Saturday with a resounding doubleheader sweep vs. Mount St. Mary's on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Buff and Blue took the first game, 13-0, in five innings before posting another shutout in the second game, 6-0.
First-year Alexa Williams continued her breakout start, piling up four hits and eight RBIs on the day. The rookie from El Cajon, Calif., launched a pair of long balls in the second victory to account for five of the team's six runs.
GW's pitching was equally impressive with Sierra Lange, Faith Weber and Megan Osterhaus combining to blank the Mountaineers over 12 innings.
It marked the sixth time in program history, and first since Feb. 28, 2018 vs. Howard, that the Buff and Blue held an opponent scoreless across a doubleheader.
GW 13, MSM 0 (5 innings):Â The Colonials set the tone for the day with an emphatic opening inning. Williams picked up a two-out RBI single to get the scoring started before Weber followed with a blast well over the left field fence to make it 4-0.
It was 5-0 in the fourth when Jenna Cone slugged her first home run of the spring, a two-run shot over the right-field fence to score Olivia Vinyard. It was the 57th homer of her decorated career.
The hits kept coming for the Buff and Blue in what turned out to be an eight-run frame. Williams, Sidney Bloomfield, Alena Ramirez and Jessica Linquist provided RBIs as part of the outburst.
In the opener, nine different Colonials provided hits and 10 scored runs.
Lange, meantime, silenced the Mountaineers, tossing a one-hitter with seven Ks. It was her eighth career shutout.
GW 6, MSM 0:Â Williams provided the offensive fireworks in the second game with the 23rd multi-homer performance in program history.
GW led 1-0 in the fourth when the rookie powered a three-run shot over the right field fence to score Ramirez and Lange.
An inning later, she struck again, clearing the left field wall with a two-run blast. She now has three home runs on the season and five of her seven hits have gone for extra bases.
That was plenty of offense thanks to Weber's work in the circle. The graduate student allowed base runners in five of her six innings but managed to avoid major trouble with timely execution. She recorded five strikeouts in earning her first victory of the spring.
Osterhaus came on to finish out the victory with a spotless seventh.
In addition to Williams, Linquist and Lange also notched a pair of hits in game two as part of a 10-hit attack.
UP NEXT:Â GW and Mount St. Mary's are slated for another twin bill on Sunday with first pitch at Our Lady of the Meadows Field in Emmitsburg, Md., coming at noon.
