Buff and Blue make home debut at The Vern on Saturday
GW softball is set to make its season debut on the Mount Vernon Campus on Saturday in a doubleheader vs. Mount St. Mary's, beginning at noon.
The Colonials and Mountaineers clash again on Sunday with another twin bill at Our Lady of the Meadows Field in Emmitsburg, Md.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW dropped four tight contests vs. quality competition on its opening weekend at the Cavalier Classic.
A pair of newcomers provided notable offensive contributions: Graduate student Amber Lotz hit a team-high .308 with a pair of doubles, while rookie Alexa Williams led the squad with seven total bases, highlighted by her first career home run in the final inning of the weekend finale.
Sierra Lange was effective in the circle in her return to action after missing all of last season due to injury, pitching in all four games and tallying 12 strikeouts across 17 1/3 innings.
PONCE'S PATIENCE:Â A two-time All A-10 selection, Alessandra Ponce made her debut at first base on opening weekend while posting the highest on-base percentage among GW regulars. The senior from Henderson, Nev., reached base in six of 15 plate appearances thanks to four walks in addition to a pair of hits. Three of the free passes came in the Saturday evening game vs. James Madison to set a single-game career high.
For her collegiate career, Ponce owns a .332/.377/.532 slash line across 361 at-bats in 136 games. Her 36 doubles rank seventh and her 74 RBIs rank 10th in program history.
ROLL CALL:Â Lotz and Williams were among five student-athletes to make their Buff and Blue debuts last weekend. Graduate student Olivia Vinyard started all four games in center field, and first-years Abby Schaub and Alena Ramirez made appearances as reserves.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS:Â Mount St. Mary's has dropped seven straight games since an extra-inning win over North Carolina Central to open the season. Kaylee Stoner leads the squad in hits and RBIs and has hit a pair of home runs on the young season.
GW holds a 13-8-1 lead in the all-time series, most recently sweeping a doubleheader at The Vern on Feb. 22, 2019. This will be the Buff and Blue's first visit to the Mount since the 2013 season.
