GW and Fordham play as non-conference foes for first time
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball will look to extend its winning streak to five games for the first time in four years on Thursday evening, welcoming Fordham for a non-conference matchup. Tip is set for 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
LET'S TALK DEFENSE: In the last four games, GW has outscored Duquesne, St. Bonaventure, Davidson and George Mason by an average of 19.8 points per game and allowed just 41.8 ppg. GW is yielding just 32.4% shooting and has held its opponent to 10 or fewer points in nine of the last 16 quarters.
GW has not allowed more than 16 made field goals in any of the four wins, is outrebounding foes by 7.0 boards per game and holds a +4.0 turnover margin, forcing 16.5 per game.
AND SOME OFFENSE: Offensively, the Colonials are shooting 45.7% from the floor and 45% from beyond the arc while averaging 61.5 points per game compared to 55.3 ppg in the first 16 games. Ali Brigham has averaged 13.5 ppg, reaching double figures in each game, and Gabby Nikitinaite has averaged 10.0 ppg with back-to-back double-digit efforts.
TRIPLING DOWN: After struggling for the majority of the season, GW has found its 3-point touch during the winning streak, averaging 6.8 made 3s per game and hitting at a 45% clip. Sunday's nine triples tied a season-high.
In the first 16 games, GW shot just 20% from beyond the arc, and averaged 2.9 made trifectas per contest. The Buff & Blue's previous season-high was five made 3s at St. Joe's and 36.4% shooting at Fordham. GW has hit five or more long balls in three of the four wins and shot 38.5% or better in each game.
A LOOK AT THE RAMS: Fordham is set to play its first game since Feb. 12 as a result of the Rose Hill campus pausing all athletic activities for two weeks on Feb. 14. The Rams were one of the hottest teams in the league at the time of the pause, winning five straight games by an average of 10.8 points per game. Even with the break, Fordham earned the No. 2 seed in next week's Atlantic 10 Championship.
Anna DeWolfe is the conference's leading scorer at 22.1 points per game, hitting a league-best 2.8 3-pointers per game. Kaitlyn Downey averages a double-double with 10.7 ppg and 10.9 rpg, leading the A-10 in boards. DeWolfe (22), Downey (10 points / 18 rebounds) and Kendall Heremaia (12) combined for 43 of Fordham's 53 in the first meeting between the teams back in January.

BICENTENNIAL SPOTLIGHT: Cathy Joens was a two-time A-10 Player of the Year in women's basketball and an honorable mention All-American in 2004 before being drafted by the WNBA's Chicago Sky. Joens graduated as the best three-point shooter in school history as she set program records for three-pointers in a career with 291, as well as single-season and career three-point field goal percentage. She averaged 14.7 points per game in her career and left GW as the university's third all-time leading scorer with 1,802 career points.
