Colonials turn attention to Atlantic 10 Championship next week
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball finished out its regular season by pushing one of the top teams in the A-10 to the brink on Thursday evening, but Fordham, playing for the first time since Feb. 12, found its legs to eke out a 48-43 non-conference victory at the Smith Center.
As is typically the case between the two defensive-minded programs, points were at a premium for a majority of the night. Neither team led by more than two possessions until the final minute, and even then, the Colonials brought it back to within three points.
The Buff & Blue entered the fourth quarter with a six point edge, 33-27, but hit just one field goal in the first seven minutes of the frame. Fordham, the No. 2 seed in next week's A-10 Championship, took advantage by going on a 12-2 run to assume a four-point lead on a Kendall Heremaia 3-pointer with three minutes left.
GW closed within a possession on three separate occasions, but the Rams answered each time to come away with the victory.
Despite the setback, GW held Fordham to a season-low 48 points and allowed only four 3-pointers to a team that averages nine makes per game. The Colonials enter the tournament having allowed just 43.0 ppg in the last five games.
Redshirt juniors Gabby Nikitinaite and Neila Luma led GW with nine points apiece. Nikitinaite hit the only triple of the day as GW shot 37.2% from the field overall.
Next on the docket is the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship, where the No. 11 seed Colonials will renew acquaintances with No. 14 seed George Mason on Wednesday. Tip from VCU's Siegel Center is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
