Colonials look to win five games in five days for conference title
WASHINGTON - After earning the No. 11 seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship, GW women's basketball begins postseason play on Wednesday afternoon against No. 14 seed George Mason. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. from VCU's Siegel Center on ESPN+.
TOURNAMENT TIDBITS: The Colonials are 44-31 all-time in 38 A-10 Championships and have won seven tournament titles, with the last coming in 2018. The Buff & Blue are 2-0 all-time against George Mason in the A-10 Championship, most recently dispatching the Patriots in the quarterfinals en route to the 2018 title. GW returns to a neutral site in the A-10 Championship for the first time since winning the conference title at the Richmond Coliseum in 2018.
STATISTICAL ODDITIES: All five of GW's five conference wins came by 15 points or more this season, including a pair of 20-point triumphs over Mason. Despite the 5-9 record in A-10 play, GW outscored its opponents by 22 points (1.6 per game). For the season, GW scored 1,174 points and allowed 1,174 points for an average of 55.9 ppg.
DEFENSIVE MASTERY: Over the last five games, the Colonials have forced more turnovers (85) than field goals allowed (76), including 19 forced miscues against Fordham last Thursday. GW is fourth in the A-10 in turnover margin (+2.6) and fifth in FG% defense (37.5%).
A LOOK AT THE PATRIOTS: George Mason enters the Atlantic 10 Championship as the No. 14 seed after going 0-14 in league play this year, being outscored by an average of 19.3 points per game. Overall, Mason is averaging just 50.5 ppg and allowing 64.8 points per contest. Marika Korpinen is the team's top scorer at 9.3 points per game, followed closely by Daijah Jefferson at 9.0 ppg. In January's meeting, Korpinen led Mason with 13 points and four rebounds. Taylor Jameson paced the Patriots with 11 points last week in the regular season finale.
