Colonials and Pirates meet for first time since 1979 NCAA Tournament
WASHINGTON - GW baseball wraps up its eight-game homestand this weekend, hosting Seton Hall for a three-game set. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. first pitch on Saturday and a noon start on Sunday.
Friday and Sunday's games will be broadcast on ESPN+. As a reminder, fan attendance at Barcroft Park is prohibited this season as part of the waiver granted by the District of Columbia to GW to host Athletics events this year.
STRIKEOUT ARTISTS: GW's pitching staff ranks atop the Atlantic 10 with 10.9 strikeouts per nine innings this year, racking up 103 Ks in just 85 innings. The Colonials have registered double-digit punchouts seven times in 10 games this year, including 25 over the last two games. All three weekend starters (Harrison Cohen, Elliott Raimo and Justin Solt) have recorded at least 14.0 K/9.
FIRST THINGS FIRST: First baseman Derek Ripp enters the weekend with a team-high 14 RBI, ranking fourth in the A-10 through 10 games. The redshirt junior has increased his production after driving in a combined 21 runs in 60 games during his first two seasons in the Buff & Blue. Ripp has picked up where he left off last year, when he hit .311 in 15 games, and he has also found his power stroke, launching his first two career home runs over the weekend against Saint Joseph's. After slugging below .400 each of his first two years, Ripp is second on the squad with a .583 slugging percentage.
ABOUT THE PIRATES: Seton Hall enters the weekend with a 3-7 mark following a series loss at Kent State last weekend. The Pirates are fifth in the Big East with a .245 team batting average and rank seventh with a 6.18 team ERA. Casey Dana is the team's top bat thus far, hitting .419/.500/.581 on the year with six RBI.
GW is 1-1 against Seton Hall, with the last meeting coming in the 1979 NCAA Tournament. The Buff & Blue earned their only win in program history in the tournament, 5-2, over the Pirates in Tallahassee, Fla.

Feb. 9, 2021 marked the 200th anniversary of the U.S. Congress' establishment of The George Washington University's charter. GW Athletics is proud to be part of the university's bicentennial celebration, honoring the historic milestone with a variety of initiatives meant to highlight the best of the Buff and Blue. Mike Toomey lettered twice at GW, earning team MVP and outstanding senior athlete in 1974. He returned to coach the Colonials for five seasons, recording 102 wins. His 1979 team won the ECAC championship and earned a NCAA Tournament appearance, picking up the program's only postseason win ever over Seton Hall. Toomey went on to an illustrious scouting career in Major League Baseball, winning a ring with Kansas City in 2015 as the special assistant to the general manager.
