Colonials and Wildcats tangle for second time on Thursday at 5 p.m.
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball welcomes Davidson on Thursday evening, aiming for its third straight win. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
BRIGHAM NAMED A-10 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK: First-year Ali Brigham collected her first career weekly honor on Monday after averaging 14.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 2.0 apg and 1.5 bpg while shooting 60% in the two victories.
The distinction is long overdue for Brigham, who is a candidate for Rookie of the Year while leading league newcomers in points per game (12.2) and field goal percentage (52.5%). Her shooting percentage is fifth in the nation among first-years, while her 21 blocks are 11th among freshmen nationally.
WHITNEY EARNS CSM A-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR: Graduate student Jasmine Whitney also earned a deserved weekly award from College Sports Madness for her performance last week, flirting with two triple-doubles and averaging 9.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 7.0 apg, 2.0 spg and 1.0 bpg.
Whitney has been a force on both ends of the floor this year. Defensively, she leads the A-10 in steals (51) and steals per game (2.8), ranking 14th and 24th, respectively, in the NCAA. Additionally, Whitney is holding her defensive assignment, the team's top-scoring guard, to 4.0 ppg below their season average.
Offensively, she is second in the league in assists per game (4.7) and third in total assists (85) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.58), accented by nine assists and no turnovers on Sunday.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: It's no coincidence that GW's efficient offensive showing last week was due in part to controlling the tempo. The Colonials averaged 65.4 possessions through the first A-10 games, but had scored just .805 points per possession. Last week the Buff & Blue had their two most efficient showings, scoring 1.09 ppp in 58 trips against Duquesne and 1.02 ppp in 55 possessions against St. Bonaventure. The previous season-best came in the win at George Mason (1.05 ppp in 64 possessions).
A LOOK AT THE WILDCATS: Davidson has struggled in conference play, dropping seven consecutive games before pulling out a 71-64 victory over Saint Joseph's on Sunday. Their struggles have been primarily on the defensive end, where the Wildcats are allowing a league-worst 68.9 ppg and 44.1% shooting. Chloe Welch still paces the team in scoring at 16.2 ppg and is joined in double digits by reigning A-10 Rookie of the Year Suzi-Rose Deegan, who provides 10.7 ppg.
BICENTENNIAL SPOTLIGHT: Feb. 9, 2021 marked the 200th anniversary of the U.S. Congress' establishment of The George Washington University's charter. GW Athletics is proud to be part of the university's bicentennial celebration, honoring the historic milestone with a variety of initiatives meant to highlight the best of the Buff and Blue. Kimberly Beck was a two-time All-American and A-10 Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Player of the Year during her career in the Buff & Blue. She is the program's all-time leader in assists with 717 and helped the Colonials to four straight NCAA Tournaments, 101 victories, four A-10 regular-season titles and consecutive Sweet 16 appearances in 2007 and 2008.
