Sheslanie Laureano scores 24 in effort
WASHINGTON- George Washington's offense staked the team to a 32-20 halftime lead at Georgetown, but it was their defense that struggled to contain the Hoyas in the second half, as GW fell 68-63 at McDonough Arena on Thursday Night.
GW's offense came out electric in the first half, getting off to a 10-0 lead in the opening minutes before pushing their advantage to as many as 14 late in the second quarter. Sheslanie Laureano played hero for GW early on, as the junior from Puerto Rico scored 15 of the team's 32 points in the first half, and when the dust settled on the opening 20 minutes, GW had a 12-point lead.
However, it was James Howard's Hoyas who came out with a vengeance after halftime, smothering the GW offense and holding them to just two field goals in the third quarter, while also shooting an impressive 83 percent from the field, including three triples from Milan Bolden-Morris. In total, the Hoyas offense scored 48 points in the final 20 minutes, and finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field, and 50 percent from three.
Laureano led all GW scorers on the evening with 24 points, while Aurea Gingras chipped in with 11 points of her own. Bolden-Morris led the way offensively for the Hoyas, with a game high 26 points.
The Buff & Blue will return to action this Sunday, when they welcome another D.C. opponent, the Howard University Bison, to the Smith Center. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
