The Colonials and Bison match-up at 2:00 from the Smith Center
WASHINGTON - Fresh off a Thursday night battle with the Georgetown Hoyas, the George Washington women's basketball team will take on another D.C. team in the form of the Howard University Bison on Sunday. Tip-off between GW and its crosstown foe is slated for 2 p.m., with live coverage available on ESPN+.
GETTING THE OFFENSIVE IN GROOVE:
After some early season struggles for GW's offense, the Colonials are finding their mark at a better clip in the last five games. GW is shooting 35 percent from the field and 31 percent from three-point range over its last five contests, compared to 33 percent from the field and 11 percent from downtown in the first five. Additionally, GW has now scored 50 points or more in five of its last six games, including a season-high 63 points against Georgetown.
PROTECT THE BALL:
Following an uncharacteristic 26 turnovers in GW's game against Virginia, hanging on to the rock was a large point of emphasis for Coach McCombs' squad against the Hoyas. In Thursday night's game, GW turned the ball over just 11 times (tied for a season low), and put together its first game this season with a positive assist/turnover ratio (+1.1).
Individually, GW starting guard Aurea Gingras, who committed eight turnovers against the Cavaliers, didn't lose a single ball Thursday night, marking her first game without a turnover since Virginia Tech (11/11).
QUEENS OF D.C.
On Sunday, the Buff and Blue will get a chance to improve their record against D.C. programs when they welcome Howard to the Smith Center. The Colonials, who already have a win against American this season, have put together a solid resume against their fellow residents of the District. Entering Sunday afternoon's game, the Buff & Blue have a 64-50 (.561) all-time record against teams from D.C., including double-digit wins against Howard, Georgetown and American.
GW Record Against Washington D.C. opponents:
Georgetown: 20-18
American: 15-14
Howard: 10-11
UDC (Division II): 6-3
Catholic (Division III): 9-3
Gallaudet (Division III): 3-1
Trinity (Division III): 1-0
BREAKING DOWN THE BISON:
Howard entered the 2021-22 season with championship expectations in the MEAC, having been picked first in the conference preseason poll. The outlook is due in part to the Bison's incredible 2020-21 season, which saw the team post the best regular-season winning percentage (.823) in school history behind a defense ranked sixth nationally in field-goal percentage defense (33.9) and three-point field goal defense (25.6).
This year, Howard dropped its first three games, but has since won four of its last five to sit at 4-4 entering Sunday. The Bison's attack is led by 2020-21 MEAC Rookie of the Year Anzhane' Hutton, and Destiny Howell, who both average just over 10 points a game.
