Mayowa Taiwo leads the way for the Colonials with a double-double
WASHINGTON- The George Washington women's basketball team got back to its winning ways on Sunday and did so in its characteristic team fashion. After dropping two straight by single-digit margins against tough competition vs. the ACC's Virginia Cavaliers and Big East's Georgetown Hoyas, GW welcomed in MEAC-favorite Howard for a matinee. For the Bison's reigning Conference Rookie of the Year Anzhane' Hutton and co-star Destiny Howell, both of whom entered Sunday averaging more than 10 points a game, they likely knew they'd be in for a struggle. By holding Howard's top dogs to 14 points total on a combined 5-of-25 shooting, the Buff and Blue's stout defense once again carried the day in the 62-53 win that moved them back above .500 on the year.
GW outshot Howard .382 to .311, including .400 to .267 from long range, continuing a trend that has seen the squad turn the corner offensively. Entering play having connected at a 35 percent rate from the field and 31 percent from three-point range over its last five contests (compared to 33 percent from the field and 11 percent from downtown in the first five), the home team found the iron kind at the Smith Center, improving on both of those marks.
As they've done all season long, a full team effort contributed to the win. George Washington put four in double figures in the scoring column, led by Taylor Webster's and Kyara Frames' matching 11-point totals. Returnees on the new-look club, Mayowa Taiwo -- who finish the day with a double-double -- and Faith Blethen, both checked in just behind with 10 points apiece, with Blethen -- the Boothbay (ME) bomber -- connecting on both of her three-point attempts in a perfect 4-for-4 day from the floor.
The shooting show also featured perfection at the charity stripe, where GW canned all dozen of its free throw attempts. The deeper GDUB squad got 25 points from its bench, outdoing the Bison reserves by 12 in the nine-point win. In all, nine found the scoring column on the home sideline and the team assisted on 13-of-21 made field goals to fuel the winning side's team triumph.
With two games left in the non-conference schedule before opening A-10 play on New Year's Day, GW now takes a week off for final exams before welcoming Lehigh to DC on Tuesday, December 21st at 2pm.
