Nya Lok drops 26 points in Sunday's contest
WASHINGTON- Last year the George Washington women's basketball team and Virginia were slated to meet in DC, but a non-Covid related injury situation on the Cavaliers roster forced the cancellation of that contest. On Sunday at the Charles E. Smith Center, the clubs finally battled and the fans got their money's worth. After a Mayowa Taiwo conversion at the 4:11 mark of the final quarter made it a one-possession game with the visitors clinging to a 56-53 advantage, GW would get no closer and saw UVa rattle off the game's final six points.
After making her Smith Center debut last game with a D1 personal high 15 points, Nya Lok continued to stage her own personal coming out party with another superlative offensive showing. After transferring from junior college Midland, and running with the South Sudan women's national team this summer, Lok helped GW stay within a possession of the ACC's Cavaliers through the first 20 minutes with 11 first half points on 5-of-8 field goal attempts. The scoring star went off for a game-high 26 points on just 17 shots, making half of her eight three-point tries and both free throw attempts, but unfortunately for GW, outside of Lok the balance of the roster went just 2-for-12 at the charity stripe in the nine-point loss.
Playing without the injured services of Ty Moore, Sheslanie Laureano and Kyara Frames -- three of GW's top seven scorers -- similarly to their day at the line, with Lok excluded the squad connected on 10-of-30 field goal attempts.
Camryn Taylor (15.2 ppg) and Amandine Toi (12.5 ppg) entered play today pacing the UVa attack, and as GW has had significant success stifling opponents' top weapons this season, the pair combined for just 23 points, almost five points below their scoring average. Two other Cavs hit double-figures though in Taylor Valladay (13) and Kayden Lawson (10) to give Virginia enough for the victory.
A massive rebounding advantage for GDUB (34-25) -- including a game-high 13 from Mayowa Taiwo -- was negated by an uncharacteristic 26 turnovers for the home team, which cost the club its chance at a Power Five victory this season, after previously challenging itself as well against Virginia Tech, Minnesota and Florida.
In a month when GW won't leave the District, a date looms on Thursday against crosstown rival Georgetown. The Buff and Blue will make the two-mile trek to the Hoyas' McDonough Arena for a 7pm tip-off, before returning home for a four-game homestand beginning next Sunday vs. Howard at 2pm.
