Nya Lok leads all scorers with 15 points
WASHINGTON- In its return to the contiguous US after spending Thanksgiving in Puerto Rico, the GW women's basketball team looked to stay undefeated against non-Power 5 teams this season. Coming into play at 4-3 with the losses coming at the hands of Virginia Tech, at Minnesota and Florida in PR, the Buff and Blue welcomed James Madison to downtown DC. While the Dukes wouldn't relent and it took a pair of Aurea Gingras free throws to ice it away in the closing seconds, GW got the job done in a 54-50 victory.
Nya Lok made her first Smith Center appearance after debuting last week and seeing time with the South Sudanese national women's basketball team over the summer, and the junior guard from Midland College in Texas wasted no time in introducing herself to the Foggy Bottom faithful. Lok had five first quarter points as GW held a 16-15 lead after one, and the home club maintained a 28-23 edge at halftime with Lok joining Albany transfer Kyara Frames atop the scoring column with eight apiece. Lok would go on to team-high scoring honors with 15 and a +10 +/- ratio in her 32:02 of action, while draining three triples in a 3-of-6 performance from behind the arc.
The Dukes, who rely heavily on the scoring prowess of junior Kiki Jefferson - an all-conference first team selection who entered play averaging 19.5 points - were stymied in the first half as Jefferson netted just six on 3-of-9 shooting thanks to the lockdown defense of Essence Brown, and JMU committed seven turnovers. After Brown got into foul trouble in the second half, Jefferson got going and finished with a game-high 20 points, but the GW defense never stopped. 17 JMU turnovers made all the difference as despite getting outshot in percentage (.380 to .339), GW hoisted nine more field goal attempts and buried four more triples to earn the win.
GDUB continues its home-heavy month right back in the Smith Center on Sunday when it welcomes the ACC's Virginia Cavaliers to DC at 2pm, live on NBC Sports Washington and ESPN+, looking for the first win of the Caroline McCombs era against Power 5 competition.
