Colonials and Rams meet for second time in six days
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball opens the month of February by squaring off with VCU for the second time in six days on Monday afternoon at the Smith Center. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
SEASON OF ACTION: This weekend, GW will be Lacing Up 4 Pediatric Cancer to support the Go4theGoal Foundation to help kids battling cancer. Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer began in the fall of 2011. Since then, professional, college and youth teams have participated in raising funds and awareness for the top cause of death among diseases in children. To date, over a half million athletes have supported the cause. $4 from every $5 pair of laces and 100% of all donations directly benefit kids and families in D.C.
Go4theGoal works to improve the lives of children battling cancer by providing financial assistance, granting special wishes, developing unique hospital programs, and funding innovative research. Learn more about Go4theGoal and how to help to make a difference by visiting Go4theGoal.org.
SHE'LL BE TAKING THAT: Graduate student Jasmine Whitney's seven steals on Friday not only set a career high, but continued her pace as the A-10 leader with 2.9 steals per game. Whitney is 21st in the country in steal average, but more notably is sixth in the NCAA with 44 total steals. Whitney averaged 54 steals per season at Pitt, while playing at least 30 games each season. Her current pace would equal roughly 88 steals in a full year. Whitney is now 12th among active Division I players with 206 career steals, surpassing the 200 mark on Friday.
STEPPING RIGHT IN: Junior Maddie Loder has returned to the starting lineup with a bang in the last two games, posting double figures in consecutive games for just the third time in her career and first time since Feb. 24 and 27, 2019. Loder has averaged 12.0 ppg over the last two and is averaging 7.4 ppg in 10 starts this year compared to 1.0 ppg in five games off the bench.
A LOOK AT THE RAMS: VCU was established as the preseason favorite in the A-10 after advancing to the championship game a year ago and falling at Dayton. The Rams have won back-to-back games against GW and George Mason (in overtime) following consecutive losses. With their overtime win at Mason on Friday, three of VCU's six conference victories have come in overtime. The Rams are led by Tera Reed, who averages 13.8 ppg and dropped 18 points with eight rebounds on Wednesday afternoon. Taya Robinson (12.6) and Sarah Te-Biasu (11.2) both average double digits and had 10 and 13 points, respectively, on Friday.
