Brigham puts up 18 in second big game against Rams
WASHINGTON - A rare Monday afternoon affair inside the Smith Center saw GW women's basketball squaring off with preseason favorite VCU for the second time in six days thanks to an odd scheduling quirk. After a slow start, VCU caught fire in the second half and pulled away from GW, 64-50.
Similar to its last three games, GW jumped out to a lead at the end of the first quarter, limiting the Rams to 3-of-12 shooting and taking a four-point lead, 11-7. VCU shook off the cold start to shoot 56% the rest of the way, and 49% overall, outscoring the Buff & Blue 19-9 in the second quarter to lead 26-20 at the break.
Both teams came out blazing in the third quarter, shooting over 60%, but the Rams used a quartet of trifectas to extend their lead and did not allow GW to get within eight points for the final 12 minutes of the game.
Fresh off a career-high 26-point performance at VCU on Wednesday, first-year Ali Brigham followed up with 18 more points on Monday, adding in five rebounds and a career-best four blocks. Redshirt junior Gabby Nikitinaite provided 11 points, including a pair of long balls, and also snared six rebounds.
Graduate student Jasmine Whitney picked up three more steals, right on her A-10-leading season average, adding nine points and three assists.
The Buff & Blue will now hit the road for the final time in the regular season, heading to New England for a pair of matchups this weekend. GW will visit Massachusetts on Friday at 5 p.m. before a noon tip at Rhode Island on Sunday. Both games will be available on ESPN+.
