Women's Basketball Falls in Final Minute at Fordham

Trio of Colonials chip in 10 points to pace the squad
WASHINGTON - In a cruel and unusual case of déjà vu, GW women's basketball saw the opposition take the lead on a corner 3-pointer in the final minute for the second time in three days, this time giving Fordham the lead for good in a 53-47 setback inside Rose Hill Gym.
Anna DeWolfe, the A-10's leading scorer entering Sunday, was the culprit this time, hitting the triple with 54 seconds left to break a 44-44 stalemate. Six Fordham foul shots sandwiched around a Caranda Perea triple sealed the deal.
As is typically the case between the programs, the defenses were the stars of the show with neither team shooting over 35 percent for the day.
GW trailed by as many as nine, 33-24, early in the second half, but its offense got into gear thanks to first-year Ali Brigham. The Franklin, Mass., native went on a personal 8-0 run bridging the third and fourth quarters to draw the Buff & Blue even at 36 with 6:45 remaining.
The burst extended to 15-4 on a 3-pointer from Gabby Nikitinaite and an and-one from Neila Luma, putting the Colonials in front, 43-40, with 4:31 remaining.
From there, though, Fordham finished the game on a 13-4 run, holding GW to just one made field goal after Luma's old-fashioned three-point play.
Brigham, Luma and Perea all reached double figures with 10 points each. Perea surpassed her career-high with seven points in the first half alone, keeping GW within striking distance.
GW now returns home for its lone home weekend in the first nine games of conference play. The Buff & Blue are scheduled to host Saint Louis on Friday at 5 p.m. before welcoming Dayton on Sunday at 12 p.m.
