Luma, Whitney reach double figures in 67-54 setback
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball returned home to the Smith Center for its only home game in the first four weeks of conference play and put forth a valiant effort against one of the league's top foes. However, a 3-point surge from the visiting Flyers allowed Dayton to pull away with a 67-54 win.
Redshirt junior Neila Luma reached double figures for the third time in as many conference games with a 12-point showing on 6-of-12 shooting. Luma used her midrange game to knock down a trio of baskets early on in a back-and-forth first quarter that featured seven ties and two lead changes.
Dayton ultimately stretched the lead to nine before a 9-0 GW flurry, punctuated by a triple from graduate student Sydney Zambrotta, evened things at 29. UD took the lead for good on a 3-pointer just before halftime, and canned four more long balls in the third quarter to stretch the lead to as many as 17.
Graduate student Jasmine Whitney put together another complete effort with 10 points, four assists, three steals and three rebounds in her 100th career game. Redshirt junior Gabby Nikitinaite earned her first start in the Buff & Blue and chipped in five points, three assists and two blocks.
GW shot 35.5% for the game, outdone by Dayton's 45% clip that included six total 3-pointers. The Flyers also were +13 on the glass (44-31) and held a 38-20 advantage in paint points and 16-6 edge in second chance points.
Things do not get much easier for the Buff & Blue, who now embark on an unprecedented five-game stretch without a home game over the next two weeks. The journey is scheduled to begin on Wednesday with a bout at Richmond. Tip is set for 5 p.m.
