Loder reached double figures for second straight game
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball returned home for the first time in 19 days on Friday night, but the friendly confines of the Smith Center could not cure the Buff & Blue's ailments in a 60-49 setback to Richmond.
The Colonials defense hounded the Spiders to the tune of a season-high 25 turnovers, including an eye-popping nine in the game's opening quarter, allowing GW to take a slim 14-12 edge.
However, GW's offense went cold in the second quarter, seeing Richmond go on an elongated 10-0 run to eventually assume a 27-23 edge. The Colonials were held at bay in the second half, only able to whittle the deficit to three on three occasions. The Spiders answered with a bucket each time and put the game away with five free throws in the final minute.
Junior Maddie Loder started the night with a bang, banking in a 3-pointer while being fouled as part of a four-point play. She ended up finishing as the only Colonial in double figures with 13 points, adding four assists and three steals.
Graduate student Jasmine Whitney, the A-10 leader in steals entering play, added to her ledger with a career-best seven swipes. She also contributed seven points and six assists. First-year Ali Brigham, coming off a career day Wednesday, added eight points and eight rebounds.
Ultimately, GW was not able to turn the season-high 16 steals into points, netting just 15 points off the 25 Spider miscues. Conversely, Richmond netted 22 off of 21 GW turnovers and shot an efficient 44.4% from the floor.
GW's busy stretch of five games in 11 days is scheduled to come to a close on Monday when it hosts VCU on ESPN+ at 2 p.m.
