Colonials and Spiders square off for the second time in 17 days on Friday
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball will get to don the white uniforms for the first time in 19 days when it hosts Richmond on Friday night at the Smith Center. Tip is scheduled for 5 p.m. with a live stream available on ESPN+.
SEASON OF ACTION: This weekend, GW will be Lacing Up 4 Pediatric Cancer to support the Go4theGoal Foundation to help kids battling cancer. Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer began in the fall of 2011. Since then, professional, college and youth teams have participated in raising funds and awareness for the top cause of death among diseases in children. To date, over a half million athletes have supported the cause. $4 from every $5 pair of laces and 100% of all donations directly benefit kids and families in D.C.
Go4theGoal works to improve the lives of children battling cancer by providing financial assistance, granting special wishes, developing unique hospital programs, and funding innovative research. Learn more about Go4theGoal and how to help to make a difference by visiting Go4theGoal.org.
PUTTING OPPONENTS IN THE BRIG: First-year Ali Brigham had 26 points on Wednesday, the second-most points scored by anyone in a conference game this season (27, twice). Her 26 points came in just 25 minutes of action and marked GW's first 20+ point performance since Alexandra Maund had 27 at Duquesne last February.
Brigham has now scored 15 points in three of the last four games (16.0 ppg). She now ranks as the A-10's top first-year scorer at 11.8 ppg and is second among conference freshmen with her 51.8 FG percentage.
OFFENSE GAINING TRACTION: Despite Wednesday's setback, GW shot a season-high 45.6 percent at VCU, its best mark since shooting 46.2% vs. Rhode Island last February. The Colonials have now shot 41% or better in three of the last four games, averaging 58.3 ppg and reaching 60+ three times. Prior to this stretch, GW had scored 60+ points three times total in its first 10 games.
A LOOK AT THE SPIDERS: Richmond finds itself near the top of the A-10 standings having won two straight games, and five of their last six overall. The Spiders most recently decimated George Mason, 86-48, on Tuesday and also exacted revenge at VCU, 69-64. Kate Klimkiewicz continues to lead UR in scoring with 13.7 ppg and posted a monster double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds against GW in the first matchup. Freshman phenom Addie Budnik, who had 12 points in the team's first battle, is second on the squad with 10.9 ppg.
