Hawks hit 12 3-pointers to eke out 63-61 win
PHILADELPHIA - A roaring start for GW women's basketball on Sunday afternoon at Hagan Arena put the Buff & Blue ahead by 14 early in the second quarter. However, Saint Joseph's found its shooting stroke from beyond the arc and held on for dear life in the final minute to edge GW, 63-61.
The Colonials burst out to the 22-8 lead thanks primarily to its defense, forcing six St. Joe's turnovers in the opening 10 minutes that led directly to 11 points. The Hawks, though, canned 7-of-9 from beyond the arc in the next nine minutes as part of an elongated 29-6 run to take a 37-28 lead at the break.
St. Joe's grew the lead to as many as 13, 53-40, with six minutes remaining before the Buff & Blue again kicked the offense into gear.
Spurred by consecutive triples from graduate student Jasmine Whitney, GW closed the gap to six with 3:35 left before another St. Joe's 3 pushed the advantage to nine.
Trailing by 10 with two minutes left after the Hawks' 12th and final long ball, GW went on a 9-1 run to whittle the deficit to two. Whitney's lay-in with a second left gave GW hope, but St. Joe's was able to inbound and run out the clock.
Whitney scored eight of her 12 points in the fourth quarter, and also contributed a team-high eight rebounds and five assists. First-year Ali Brigham paced GW in scoring with 16 points, 12 of which came after intermission.
Graduate student Sydney Zambrotta notched double digits for the second time in as many games, scoring 13 points with four rebounds and three assists.
The Colonials shot 41% for the game, but were ultimately done in by the dozen trifectas and 44% shooting from St. Joe's.
The Buff & Blue wrap up their five-game stretch away from the Smith Center on Wednesday at VCU. Tip-off has been shifted to 12 p.m. with a live stream available on ESPN+.
