First-year center has career day as GW falls 67-60
RICHMOND, Va. - GW first-year center had an individual day to remember with 26 points on Wednesday afternoon at VCU, but the A-10 preseason favorite fended off the Buff & Blue's comeback effort in a 67-60 defeat at the Siegel Center.
Brigham's 26 points came on an efficient 12-of-15 shooting with points in bunches during two stretches. The first was 10 straight points to open up the second quarter, allowing the Colonials to build their largest lead, 24-14.
However, VCU, which made just two of its first 17 shots, caught fire in the final five minutes, going on a 17-3 run to assume a 31-27 halftime edge it would not relinquish.
The Rams pushed their cushion to as many as 10 at the end of the third quarter, but that was when Brigham re-emerged with 10 straight points again, willing the Colonials to within six, 57-51.
GW got to within five on the Franklin, Mass., native's final bucket with 2:18 remaining, but drew no closer. The Buff & Blue had a pair of chances to make it a one-possession game, but a pair of turnovers sealed their fate.
Brigham became the first Colonial this season to reach the 20-point threshold, posting the highest total since Alexandra Maund's 27 points at Duquesne last year.
Junior Maddie Loder, who re-entered the starting lineup for the first time since Jan. 3, scored seven points in the opening frame en route to 11 points for her second double-digit day of the season.
Thanks to Brigham's prowess, GW shot a season-best 46% from the field, but the visitors were done in by 16 turnovers that led to 24 points for VCU.
The Colonials will finally return home for a pair of matchups this weekend, including a rematch with VCU on Monday. First up, though, is a battle with Richmond on Friday night at the Smith Center. Tip is scheduled for 5 p.m. with a livestream available on ESPN+.
