Colonials look for Philly split at 2 p.m. Sunday
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball closes out its weekend in Philadelphia with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday against Saint Joseph's. A live stream will be available on ESPN+.
SEASON OF ACTION: GW is proud to host its own Pride week from Jan. 20-27 to stand in support with the LGBTQIA+ community. Over the week, the program will be sharing info about National and D.C.-based organizations that you can support.
Assistant coach Kevin DeMille has launched a donation drive, joined by head coach Jennifer Rizzotti, benefiting The Trevor Project, the world's largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ youth, and The DC Center for the LGBTQ Community. A donation will be made for each GW assist over the next three games to The Trevor Project, and a donation will be made for each GW forced turnover during that span to The DC Center for the LGBTQ Community. Fans are encouraged to join the fundraiser by contributing an amount of their choice to each organization.
HEATING UP: Sydney Zambrotta's 17 points on Sunday continued her progression since missing the first eight games of the season with a finger injury. Zambrotta's minutes have stayed the same or increased each game (12, 18, 18, 32), as has her scoring (3, 3, 7, 17). The Louisville transfer reached double digits 10 times in 23 games a year ago, second-most on the team.
FOR STARTERS: Zambrotta became the ninth different Colonial this year to record a double-digit scoring game. She is also the sixth different student-athlete to lead GW in scoring.
GW employed its sixth different starting lineup of the season on Friday with Zambrotta sliding in for an injured Mayowa Taiwo. Zambrotta is the ninth different starter for the Buff & Blue this year. A year ago, GW had 11 different players start and 13 different starting combinations.
A LOOK AT THE HAWKS: Saint Joseph's returns to action for the first time in two weeks following a COVID pause, having played only four games all season due to multiple stoppages. SJU is 1-1 in league play, splitting a pair of games with La Salle on Jan. 8 and Jan. 10, winning by 29 in the first matchup before falling by 15 the next game. Alayna Gribble, who has appeared in only two of the four games, averages 16.0 ppg to lead the squad while Gabby Smalls averages a double-double with 11.0 ppg and 10.0 rpg in four appearances off the bench.
