Colonials earn first A-10 win, put three in double figures
FAIRFAX, Va. - GW women's basketball jumped out to a 17-4 advantage in the first six minutes on Sunday afternoon, setting the tone for a 20-point victory over Revolutionary Rival George Mason for the first win of A-10 play.
The game-opening burst allowed the Colonials to lead from wire-to-wire, and by double digits for the final 18 minutes of the game. Mason got as close as three in the second quarter, but an 8-0 spurt helped GW enter the locker room up 33-25.
The Buff & Blue left no doubt in the second half, completing arguably their most complete frame of the year with a 19-6 third quarter that was accented by an and-one from graduate student Sydney Zambrotta in the waning seconds.
The run extended to 13 in a row to open the fourth quarter and the lead swelled to 28 (67-39) on a 3-pointer from first-year Aurea Gingras late in the game.
The 20-point win was the largest margin of victory in nearly three years for the Buff & Blue, dating back to a 20-point win over La Salle in 2018.
Three Colonials reached double digits, led by first-year Ali Brigham, who finished a point shy of a career-high with 18 points (8-14 FG), plus three rebounds and three blocks. Redshirt junior Gabby Nikitinaite posted double digits for the first time in the Buff & Blue with 10 points and seven rebounds. Redshirt junior Neila Luma chipped in 12 points for her fifth straight game in double digits to open A-10 play.
GW shot a season-best 41.2% from the floor and held an eye-popping 21-4 edge in points off turnovers, committing just five while forcing 20 Patriot miscues. The Colonials also dominated in the paint, owning a 38-20 scoring advantage there.
GW is now scheduled for a busy week, starting on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. tip at VCU.
