Zambrotta pours in 17, one off career-high
PHILADELPHIA - A two-possession game for the first 36 minutes on Friday night at Tom Gola Arena turned sour for the GW women's basketball team as La Salle finally created separation with an 11-0 run that allowed the Explorers to pull out a 60-45 victory.
GW pulled within three, 43-40, with four minutes left on a pair of free throws from graduate student Sydney Zambrotta, who finished with a season-high 17. La Salle's Kayla Spruill, who finished with a game-high 23, canned a 3-pointer on the next possession to spark the decisive spurt of the game.
The long ball was the dagger for the Explorers, who hit 11 from beyond the arc in the game, including four in the fourth quarter. La Salle outshot GW 36 percent to 33 percent overall.
The Colonials, uncharacteristically as of late, turned the ball over 20 times that led to 24 points for La Salle. GW entered the day having committed just 19 turnovers in the last three games combined.
Zambrotta came within a point of her career-high, leading the way with 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Fellow graduate student Jasmine Whitney reached double digits with 10 points, and added six rebounds, four assists and a steal.
GW will stay in Philadelphia to finish out its weekend, facing Saint Joseph's on Sunday at 2 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
