Levy drills game-winning free throws with 9.8 seconds remaining
RICHMOND, Va. - Showcasing a new rotation strategy that emphasized team over everything, GW women's basketball pulled out one of its best wins of the season, 56-55, over VCU at the Siegel Center on Sunday afternoon.
With the game in the balance, GW got a pair of stops sandwiched around critical free throws from junior Lexus Levy to win the game. Levy, who made her first career start in her 80th appearance in the Buff & Blue, was fouled on a baseline inbounds and calmly stepped to the line with 9.8 seconds remaining.
The Johnson City, N.Y., native hit nothing but net on both attempts to turn a 55-54 deficit into a 56-55 lead. The Colonials then forced a deep 3-point attempt at the buzzer from Tera Reed that clanged off the iron and dealt the host Rams just their second conference loss of the year.
Head coach Jennifer Rizzotti, for the first time in her career, implemented a "line change" style of substitution in the game, changing all five players out every 4-5 minutes.
The result was 10 different Colonials who saw between 17 and 22 minutes of action and nine different scorers, none of which reached double figures. Levy became the ninth different Colonial to lead the team in scoring with her season-high nine points, equaled by that of graduate student Alexandra Maund.
Sophomore Kayla Mokwuah hauled in a game-best 10 rebounds and redshirt junior Sydney Zambrotta provided a balanced effort of seven points, three rebounds and five assists, which matched a career high.
For the sixth time this season, GW rallied from a double-digit deficit for the win, this time coming back after trailing 29-19 with 2:54 remaining in the second quarter. The Buff & Blue responded with seven straight to end the half and close the gap to 29-26.
The third quarter exemplified just how much of a team effort it would take to pull out the win. GW outscored VCU 17-9 and shot 66.7% from the floor with seven different players scoring in the frame.
The Colonials extended the lead to as many as seven, 48-41, with 7:19 remaining before VCU went on a 14-6 run over the next six minutes to assume a one-point advantage. GW never wavered in getting three stops on the ensuing three possessions, coupled with the free throws from Levy, to emerge victorious.
The Buff & Blue had their best shooting day of A-10 play, hitting 46.8% from the floor and canning six 3s. On the defensive end, GW held VCU to 38.5% shooting, including 32% in the second half.
After a wicked week on the road, GW now will stay at home for the week, welcoming in La Salle on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and George Mason on Saturday at 2 p.m. Wednesday's game will serve as a Black History Month celebration with free t-shirts for the first 100 fans in attendance.
