Taiwo notches second career double-double
WASHINGTON - Six times this season the GW women's basketball team has emerged victorious in a contest in which it once trailed by double digits. On Wednesday night at the Smith Center in Downtown D.C., the team made a bid for a seventh.
After falling behind by 10 in the first half, 20-10, the team roared back to take a lead as big as nine, 38-29, midway through the third quarter. GW then faced a La Salle onslaught that saw the Explorers net 25 of the game's next 27 points to put the Colonials in yet another double-digit hole, 54-40, with just 6:20 remaining in the contest. Showing considerable fight, the Buff and Blue nearly did it again. GW would rally to make it a 54-51 ballgame with 3:34 remaining, but couldn't get closer than three the rest of the way in an eventual 61-54 setback.
Utilizing the same five-in, five-out substitution strategy that led to a thrilling win at A-10 heavyweight VCU on Sunday for much of the game, the balanced Colonials saw all ten student-athletes who saw court time play somewhere between Sydney Zambrotta's 14:36 and Lexus Levy's 25:24. Redshirt freshman Mayowa Taiwo double-doubled with 10 points and 11 rebounds in her 24:46, while fellow redshirt freshman Tori Hyduke netted a team-high 13 points. The Colonials were undone, however, behind the 3-point arc as the Explorers' 3-point proclivity victimized the Buff and Blue.
La Salle hoisted 28 of its 52 field goal attempts from long range, and when 12 of them found their mark (a .429 clip), GW had a tough time keeping up. Freshman Claire Jacobs, the visitor's top scorer who entered play averaging 13.2 ppg and 15.2 ppg in conference play, upped both averages in a 16-point outing. Sophomore Kayla Spruill, La Salle's other double-digit scorer vs. A-10 foes, registered 11 in a perfect 3-for-3 night from deep. In all, seven different Explorers saw success shooting from the land of plenty.
With five games remaining on the regular season slate, GW now turns its attention to Saturday's rematch with Revolutionary Rival George Mason looking for revenge. Earlier this season in the A-10 Opener in Fairfax, the Patriots started 1-0 against the Colonials in a 70-60 decision. Tip-time from the Smith Center Saturday is 2 p.m. live on ESPN+.
