Maund, Mokwuah and Taiwo combine for 38 points
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball found a way to get a much-needed victory on Saturday afternoon, scoring the final six points in the last minute to knock off Revolutionary Rival George Mason, 62-57.
Trailing by one with 56 seconds left, GW went to work on the offensive end with redshirt freshman Mayowa Taiwo securing an offensive board while being fouled and hitting one of two at the line to tie the game. Graduate student Alexandra Maund corralled the carom on the miss, extending the possession.
With the shot clock dwindling down, it was redshirt freshman Tori Hyduke who put her head down in the paint and somehow spun the ball perfectly off the glass on a driving layup to push GW in front, 59-57, with 19.8 seconds left.
The Colonials then forced a stop on the other end and hit 3-of-4 free throws in the final four seconds, sandwiched around yet another o-board from Taiwo to seal the deal.
The back-and-forth affair featured six ties and nine lead changes with neither team leading by more than nine (Mason in the second quarter). The Colonials utilized their advantage in the post to the tune of 38 combined points from Maund, Taiwo and sophomore Kayla Mokwuah.
Maund led the team with 16 points and eight boards, reaching double figures for the first time since Jan. 29 at Saint Joseph's. Taiwo finished just a rebound shy of her second straight double-double, adding 11 points and nine rebounds. Four of her nine boards came in the critical final frame.
Mokwuah was a master of efficiency with 11 points in just 14 minutes of action. She's now reached double figures in all three career games against the Patriots.
GW's bench, anchored by Taiwo and Mokwuah, supplied a season-high 32 points, outscoring the Patriots by 20 in the category. The Colonials also took advantage of 18 Mason turnovers, turning that into 14 points.
The Buff & Blue now hit the road for their final two road games of the season, beginning with a trip to first-place Dayton on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
