Maund leads a trio of Colonials in double figures with 12 points
DAYTON, Ohio - GW women's basketball showcased its bright future and incredible resolve on Wednesday night, forcing Dayton, the first-place team in the league, into quite the battle before ultimately falling, 50-44.
As has been the case time and time again this season, the Buff & Blue roared back from a slow start to take the lead, but UD's experience shined in the final four minutes.
GW found itself down 17-3 after a quarter but then put the clamps on Dayton for the next 20 minutes, eventually taking a five-point lead, 36-31, into the fourth quarter.
The Buff & Blue played arguably their best quarter of the season in the third, hitting 9-of-13 shots from the floor and outscoring the Flyers 22-8 to turn a nine-point halftime deficit into a five-point edge.
A pair of redshirt freshmen - Tori Hyduke and Mayowa Taiwo - went on a scintillating 8-0 run during a minute-long stretch in the frame with Hyduke canning a pair of long balls around a Taiwo acrobatic catch and layup to close the gap to 25-24.
GW still led by five, 40-35, with under five minutes remaining before Erin Whalen hit back-to-back 3s to push Dayton in front. A jumper from redshirt junior Sydney Zambrotta put GW ahead, 42-41, but the Colonials were held without a field goal for the next three minutes while Dayton scored eight in a row to take the lead for good.
Hyduke and Taiwo were two of four first-year starters for the Buff & Blue, joining true freshmen Faith Blethen and Essence Brown. Grad student Alexandra Maund was the fifth starter and ultimately led GW with 12 points and five rebounds.
Hyduke was a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc in the game en route to 11 points, also dishing out three assists. Sophomore Kayla Mokwuah gave GW a trio in double figures with 10 points off the bench.
The Buff & Blue now face a quick turnaround and head back out on the road on Saturday, battling Duquesne in a rematch of a 65-60 GW victory on Jan. 8. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
