Graduate student dominates with 27 points in 72-65 triumph
PITTSBURGH - Needing a win to stay in the hunt for hosting a first round game in the fast approaching A-10 Women's Basketball Championship, GW relied upon its graduate transfers to deliver an inspiring 72-67 victory at Duquesne on Saturday night.
Alexandra Maund was the headliner, blowing past her previous career high of 18 with 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting, including an unstoppable third quarter when she poured in 12 points in a six-minute stretch. The Dorchester, Mass., native stuffed the stat sheet with six rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks in 29 minutes.
Her 27 points were the most for a Colonial in over two years, dating back to Kelli Prange's 36-point outburst on Jan. 24, 2018 vs. Rhode Island.
While Maund carried the team throughout the night, it was fellow grad student Ariel Stephenson who provided the daggers with three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as part of a 12-point night, her best output of A-10 play.
Redshirt freshman Mayowa Taiwo dominated with Maund inside, nearly equaling her career-best with 16 points and six rebounds.
The Colonials had one of their best offensive days of the year, shooting 52.2% from the floor and dishing out a season-best 21 assists on 24 made field goals. In crunch time, it was the performance at the free throw line where GW shined, nailing 12-of-14 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter and 19-of-23 for the game.
Trailing by seven, 35-28, at intermission, GW burst out of the locker room with a 15-3 run in the opening 5:30 of the second half to take a five-point edge, 43-38. Duquesne came right back, though, with an 11-4 spurt to take a two-point lead into the fourth quarter.
It was then Stephenson's turn to step up, saving the ball for a defensive rebound on one end and canning a triple on the other to put the Buff & Blue ahead, 54-52, with six minutes left. Another 3-pointer two minutes later put GW up four, 58-54, and her final trifecta was part of a 7-0 run that gave GW its largest lead of the night, 65-56, with 2:15 left.
Duquesne made things interesting with six straight points, but would get no closer as the Colonials canned their final eight free throws to ice the game.
The win completes a season sweep of the Dukes (7-7 A-10) for GW (6-8), who moved to within a game of their hosts with the triumph. The Buff & Blue are just a half-game out of hosting position for the A-10 Championship and will have the benefit of home court advantage this week for two crucial games.
First, Rhode Island brings its 6-8 A-10 mark to the Smith Center on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tip before Richmond (6-7), who owns the final hosting spot as of Saturday, comes to D.C. for Senior Day on Saturday at 2 p.m.
