Colonials and Rams square off at the Smith Center on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball begins the final week of the regular season with a crucial conflict on Tuesday evening, welcoming Rhode Island to the Smith Center for a 7 p.m. tip.
SCENARIO SEASON: The Colonials and Rams are two of three teams (with La Salle) tied for ninth at 6-8 in the league standings. Both are a game behind a four-way tie for fifth at 7-7. With two games remaining in the regular season, GW could finish anywhere between 4th and 12th in the A-10 standings. Seeds No. 3-8 host a first-round matchup next Tuesday.
SHE'S A MAUND-STAR: Graduate student Alexandra Maund was instrumental in GW's victory Saturday at Duquesne, putting up 27 points (10-15 FG) with six rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks. The 27 points were nearly 10 more than her previous career best (18) and are tied for the third-most by an A-10 player this season.
Over her last three games, all double-digit efforts, Maund is averaging 18.3 ppg and 6.3 rpg and shooting 50% from the floor.
TORI TIME: Redshirt freshman Tori Hyduke has looked more like her early-season self recently, averaging 9.2 ppg over her last five with a pair of double-digit efforts. In that stretch, she is shooting 53% from the floor (14/26) and 57% from beyond the arc (8/14), including a perfect 3-of-3 day from deep at Dayton.
Hyduke has also shown progress in distributing the ball with a 1.8 assist-to-turnover ratio (11a/6to) the last five games. She tied her career best with four helpers on Saturday and has committed one or fewer turnover in four of the five games.
MAKING IT COUNT: The Buff & Blue hit 12-of-14 free throws in the fourth quarter on Saturday as part of a 19-for-23 (82.6%) day overall. This month, GW is taking part in the Kay Yow Fund Free Throw Challenge with donations for every free throw made. With 65 made freebies, GW has raised $926 for the foundation.
HISTORY VS. RHODE ISLAND: The Colonials face Rhode Island for the only time this season in an all-time series that has been all Buff & Blue. GW has won 43 of the 49 all-time meetings with the Rams, including nine straight dating back to 2011. The nine-game winning streak is the longest active against any A-10 opponent for the Colonials. GW is a perfect 24-0 all-time against the Rams at the Smith Center, with URI coming to D.C. for the first time since January 2018.
A LOOK AT THE RAMS: Rhode Island features one of the most potent 1-2 punches in the league with Nicole Jorgensen (15.5 ppg / 8.5 rpg) and Davida Dale (13.2 ppg / 8.0 rpg / 4.9 apg). Jorgensen tops the league in rebounding and field goal percentage (49.7%) while leading the loop with 10 double-doubles. Dale tops the A-10 in assists and is also second in steals (2.0 per game).
Rhode Island's advantage lies inside as the top rebounding team in the circuit, securing the sixth-most rebounds per game in the nation. URI also possesses a top-15 national rebounding margin at +8.9 per game.
