Mokwuah ties career high with 18 points
WASHINGTON - When the Rams of Rhode Island trotted into the Smith Center on Tuesday night, the GW Colonials met them with a matching record in conference play (6-8), as both teams sought a leg up in the donnybrook to host a first round A-10 Championship game. As a top-8 seed is needed to host, the enigma that was the standings entering Tuesday featured the two combatants tied with La Salle for ninth in the conference, behind a four-way tie for fifth at 7-7.
Strongly in GW's favor though was the squad's perfect 24-0 all-time against the Rams at the Smith Center. Thanks to a scorching first half that saw the Buff and Blue connect on 17-of-28 field goal attempts (.607), including 4-of-7 from deep, the 5-for-5 subbing pattern that has been utilized of late led to a fresh GDUB club in the fourth quarter that grew a lead to 19 at its largest and cruised to a 73-56 win -- the 25th all-time with zero losses against Rhode Island at the Smith Center.
Most impressive about this W, aside from the crisp one hour and 33 minutes in which it was played, was the way that the Colonials flummoxed the Rams on the glass. URI entered play averaging the sixth-most rebounds per game in the country, with a top-15 ranking in rebounding margin at +8.9 rpg. That didn't materialize in this one. Despite not having a single student-athlete grab more than five rebounds (Mayowa Taiwo and Alexandra Maund both had five), all 10 individuals rebounded as a team to out-corrall the Rams on the boards, 33-24.
The GW D also stymied one of the A-10's most potent 1-2 punches in Nicole Jorgensen (15.5 ppg / 8.5 rpg) and Davida Dale (13.2 ppg / 8.0 rpg / 4.9 apg). Jorgensen topped the league entering Tuesday in rebounding, but was held to five on the evening alongside nine points. Dale, the A-10's best assister, had six dimes and 14 points to up her averages, but her 14 points came on 17 shots in a 6-of-17 night.
On the GW side, Maund finished with 16 points, continuing her sterling play of late, while fellow post Kayla Mokwuah backed her up with a game-high 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting, tying a career high. The redshirt freshman tandem of Tori Hyduke (12 points, 4-of-5 3s) and Taiwo (10 points on 5-of-6 shooting) gave the Colonials four double-digit scorers in an aesthetically pleasing performance. GW had a 23-9 assist:turnover ratio and assisted on almost 70% of its baskets, setting a season-high in helpers for the second straight game.
Senior Day now awaits with seniors Olivia Gumbs and Sarah Overcash, along with grad students Maund and Ariel Stephenson to be honored Saturday before the regular season finale vs. Richmond in D.C. at 2 p.m. Brunchketball will precede the game with the team learning its A-10 postseason opponent and location upon the conclusion of Saturday night's A-10 slate.
