Colonials win third straight to finish regular season, 50-40
WASHINGTON - The stage was set and the scenario was clear before the George Washington women's basketball team hosted the Richmond Spiders on Saturday afternoon. In the final day of Atlantic 10 regular season play, a win for the Colonials would mean hosting a first round A-10 Championship game on Tuesday night at the Smith Center. With a loss, GW would find itself on the road Tuesday night.
The Smith Center will now see one more game this season after a resounding, 50-40 win.
If the adage holds true that defense wins championships, GW is a prime candidate to bring home the trophy next weekend in Dayton. A 9-5 GW first quarter advantage gave way to a comparative offensive explosion in the second with the Spiders taking a 21-20 lead into intermission. Moreover, it was the way in which the teams slugged each other early that showed the defensive bonafides. Neither team scored for the first 5:26 of the ballgame until Richmond hit a 3-pointer, and GW didn't break the seal until a Faith Blethen jumper found its mark with 3:08 to play in the opening stanza.
The third quarter, however, was a different story altogether, at least for the home team. GW shook off its first-half offensive lull and tore out of the halftime locker room on a 9-0 run to build an eight-point lead, and extended its third quarter push to a 20-5 edge that gave the Buff & Blue a double-digit advantage, 40-26, entering the final frame. The Colonials third-quarter total matched the combined first half output, and resembled the team that dropped 70+ points in both of its last two games. GDUB connected on a sizzling 8-of-12 third-quarter shots, including 3-of-6 from 3-point land, to account for half of its threes in the game. GW also netted 40% of its total points in the third quarter.
Blethen both got it started for the Colonials and led the team on the day with a game-high 13 points. Her 5-of-9 shooting performance (3-of-6 3pt. FG) was a differentiator in the contest. The rookie trio of Blethen, Mayowa Taiwo (3-of-5, nine points) and Tori Hyduke (seven points) accounted for 58% of the team's scoring output. While not to be outdone by her younger peers, graduate student Alexandra Maund -- after singing the national anthem pregame -- was the game's only other double-digit scorer with her 11 points.
Prior to the game, graduate students Maund and Ariel Stephenson and redshirt juniors Olivia Gumbs and Sarah Overcash were honored in a special ceremony on Senior Day. Maund, Stephenson, Gumbs and Overcash will now get one more game in front of the Smith Center faithful. Tip time Tuesday in the first round tournament game is 7 p.m. GW will learn its opponent following the full slate of games on Saturday. Tickets for Tuesday's clash can now be purchased here.
