Colonials playing for home first round matchup at 2 p.m. on Saturday
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball celebrates Senior Day on Saturday, welcoming Richmond in to the Smith Center for a 2 p.m. tip.
The Colonials will honor graduate students Alexandra Maund and Ariel Stephenson as well as redshirt juniors Olivia Gumbs and Sarah Overcash in a pregame ceremony at 1:45 p.m. A special Brunchketball ($10 game ticket and brunch), begins at 1 p.m. in the Tin Tabernacle club.
HERE'S THE SITUATION: The Colonials and Spiders enter Saturday at 7-8 in the conference, tied for the last hosting spot in next week's A-10 Championship. The winner of Saturday's game will host a first round game. With a win, the Buff & Blue will play at the Smith Center Tuesday and finish somewhere between the fifth and eighth seeds pending other results. A loss sends GW on the road as either the ninth or 10th seed.
PEAKING AT THE RIGHT TIME: GW scored at least 70 points for the second straight game on Tuesday, doing so in consecutive games for the first time since Feb. 4 and Feb. 8, 2017. The Colonials are shooting an astounding 55.3 percent from the floor and 47.8 percent from beyond the arc en route to the two triumphs.
The Buff & Blue have also set season-bests in assists in back-to-back games, averaging 22 per game in the two wins. GW's rebounding has stood out as well with a +10.0 margin over the last two, including outrebounding the league's top squad (Rhode Island) by nine on Tuesday.
THE BIG THREE: The primary reason for GW's field goal efficiency has been the play of posts Alexandra Maund, Kayla Mokwuah and Mayowa Taiwo. Over the last four games, of which GW has won three, the trio has averaged 38.0 ppg, 13.5 rpg, 5.0 apg and shot 49.6%from the field.
Maund has scored in double figures in four straight games, including a career-high 27 points at Duquesne last Saturday. Mokwuah tied her career-best with 18 on Tuesday and, like Taiwo, has scored at least 10 points in three of the last four.
TOR-NING THE CORNER: Redshirt first-year Tori Hyduke has been the fourth-leading scorer in the recent hot streak, looking more like her early-season self. Hyduke is averaging 9.7 ppg over her last six with three double-digit efforts. In that stretch, she is shooting 56.3% from the floor (18/32) and 63.2% from beyond the arc (12/19) to vault back into third in the A-10 in 3-point pct (.422).
Hyduke has also distributed the ball well with a 2.0 assist-to-turnover ratio (14a/7to) in the last six games. She has now committed one or fewer turnover in five of the six games.
HISTORY VS. RICHMOND: The Colonials finish the regular season against Richmond for the fourth straight year, looking to snap a two-game skid against the Spiders. UR won last year's finale, 56-48, at the Robins Center after spoiling GW's Senior Day two years ago with a 49-36 triumph. The Buff & Blue had won eight straight before the two-game drought and are looking for their first win at the Smith Center since an overtime triumph, 55-53, in 2016. GW is 11-6 all-time at home against Richmond.
A LOOK AT THE SPIDERS: Richmond saw its two-game winning streak come to an end with a 60-57 last-minute loss to Saint Louis on Wednesday. The two teams have had very similar seasons with UR winning seven of its last 11 games after starting league play 0-4.
The Spiders are led by a trio of double-digit performers in Jaide Hines-Clarke (11.8 ppg), Claire Holt (11.3) and Kate Klimkiewicz (10.0). Offensively, UR has been held to 59.9 ppg in conference play despite ranking fifth in field goal percentage (39.0%). The reason has been turnovers, as the Spiders commit a league-worst 18.0 per game against A-10 competition.
