Colonials and Flyers tip-off at 7 p.m.
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball begins its final road swing of the season with a trip to face first-place Dayton on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
STOP SIGN: GW scored the final six points in Saturday's victory, needing a stop in the final minute to preserve the win that was ultimately put away with four free throws. Six times this year (Memphis, Georgetown, Duquesne, UMass, VCU, George Mason), GW has had a one-possession lead in the final minute and all six times, the Colonials' defense has gotten a stop to clinch the win.
In those six situations, opponents are 1-of-9 from the floor and twice have failed to get a shot off. The only make was at Memphis that gave the Tigers a brief lead before Mayowa Taiwo's game-winning layup with 0.9 seconds remaining. GW then got the ensuing stop to clinch the win.
MY-OH-MY: Taiwo continues to be a force in her redshirt freshman campaign, averaging a double-double in two games last week (10.5 ppg / 10.0 rpg). Taiwo finished a rebound shy of a double-double on Saturday but saved her best for last with five points and four boards in the fourth quarter, including two offensive rebounds in the final minute.
Taiwo has now posted at least three offensive rebounds nine times this year, including each of the last four games. She is tied for fourth overall (2.5 per game) and third in league-only games (3.0) in offensive rebounding.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE: Taiwo has also appeared to turn the corner on the offensive end, leading the team and ranking second in the A-10 with her 51.9% field goal percentage in league games. Over her last seven games, she is averaging 8.9 ppg and 7.4 rpg while shooting 62.8% from the floor. In that stretch, she has three double-figure efforts and has notched at least seven rebounds in five of the seven games.
HISTORY VS. DAYTON: The Colonials and Flyers meet for the second time this season after Dayton claimed a 66-50 victory at the Smith Center on Jan. 22. This season is the seventh straight year in which GW and UD have met twice in the regular season. The Buff & Blue are looking for their first win in Dayton since Jan. 10, 2016, having dropped the last three affairs on the road in the series.
A LOOK AT THE FLYERS: Dayton has run through the A-10 with a perfect 12-0 in the mark, winners of 14 in a row overall. The Flyers have a chance to clinch a share of the A-10 regular season title with a win on Wednesday. Junior transfer Erin Whalen continues to lead the team with 13.2 ppg with senior Jayla Scaife averaging 12.6 ppg. The defense has been the primary reason for UD's success, as the Flyers lead the league in scoring defense (51.4) and field goal percentage defense (34.0%) in conference play so far this season.
