WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball begins a two-game road swing on Thursday evening at the Reilly Center with a battle against St. Bonaventure. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
BENCH BOOST: GW's 28 bench points on Sunday against Saint Louis were not only a season high, but another 20+ point showing that has become common in league play. The Colonials now have received at least 20 points from their reserves in five of eight A-10 games with a combined eight double-digit efforts from Kayla Mokwuah (5) and Sydney Zambrotta (3).
Thanks to its 28-1 advantage on Sunday, GW is now +49 (154-105) in bench points during league play (+6.1 per game), with an average of 19.3 per game.
ZAMBROTTA RIDES AGAIN: Redshirt junior Sydney Zambrotta came within a pair of matching her season high on Sunday, but did equal her A-10 high with 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Zambrotta has averaged 13.5 ppg over her last two games, shooting 45% (9/20) from the floor after a four-game stretch in which she averaged 4.5 ppg and shot 10.7% (3/28).
The Louisville transfer hit a pair of 3s on Sunday, snapping a 1-for-19 drought with her first multi-triple game since Jan. 8.
A WELCOME SIGN: GW's defense has begun rounding into form the last three games, yielding just 52.0 ppg and holding its opponents to 34.1% from the floor. The stretch includes limiting UMass to an opponent season-low 27.9% from the floor and then restricting St. Joe's to 17 points in the first half. Overall, the Buff & Blue have held four of their last six opponents to 37% or worse.
The key has been 2-point defense, where GW has allowed UMass, St. Joe's and Saint Louis to shoot only 30.8% inside the arc. However, the three teams have combined to shoot 41.5% from deep, canning 22 3s to account for 42% of the points allowed.
HISTORY VS. ST. BONAVENTURE: The Colonials have controlled the all-time series with the Bonnies, winning 37 of 45 matchups in program history. GW has won three in a row overall, including last year's 57-44 victory at the Smith Center. Thursday represents the only matchup between the programs this year and the Buff & Blue's first trip to the Reilly Center in two years. The victory in 2018 snapped a five-game road losing streak in the series for GW.
A LOOK AT THE BONNIES: St. Bonaventure is 2-7 in conference play following an overtime loss at Richmond over the weekend. The Bonnies have seen most of their success come on their home floor this year, with both league victories and four of their five overall triumphs coming at the Reilly Center. SBU is 12th in the league in both scoring offense (58.3) and defense (66.0), but does take care of business at the free throw line by ranking eighth nationally at 78.0%.
Asianae Johnson is the team's top offensive weapon at 12.3 ppg, increasing her output to 13.2 ppg in league play. Dajah Logan, one of the team's top 3-point threats at 33.9%, gives SBU two double figure scorers with 10.3 ppg.
