Women's Basketball Falls Victim to Fourth-Quarter Comeback at St. Bonaventure
2/6/2020 9:24:00 PM | Women's Basketball
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - GW women's basketball played a strong first three quarters on the road on Thursday night at St. Bonaventure, but a ferocious comeback from the host Bonnies denied GW a chance at a road win in a 59-55 setback at the Reilly Center.
The Colonials led by as many as 14 in the second half and enjoyed a 12-point cushion to start the fourth quarter. However, the Bonnies' offense - primarily Asianae Johnson - erupted with a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to three, 53-50, with 6:20 remaining.
After a free throw from Ariel Stephenson pushed the lead to four, Johnson scored two more of her four straight baskets to draw SBU even at 54. A 3-pointer from Jurnee President with 1:37 left put the Bonnies up for good as the hosts outscored GW 22-6 in the final frame.
Johnson ended up scoring 12 of her game-high 20 points in the fourth frame to pace St. Bonaventure, leading four players in double figures.
GW had enjoyed an efficient and balanced offensive display in the first 30 minutes with nine different players getting into the scoring column. Redshirt junior Sydney Zambrotta ultimately led the team with 10 points, her third straight game in double figures.
The Buff & Blue found their stroke from deep early in the game with redshirt freshman Tori Hyduke canning a pair of triples as part of a game-opening 8-0 run. GW hit six 3s on the night, including a pair from first-year Faith Blethen as part of a nine-point night.
The road gets no easier for the Colonials, who will face a quick turnaround with a trip down I-95 to face VCU, owners of an 8-1 league mark, in Richmond on Sunday. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
