Brigham reaches double figures for fourth straight game
HARRISONBURG, Va. - First-year Ali Brigham continued the tremendous start to her Buff & Blue career, dropping a career-best 19 points, but it wasn't enough as GW fell at CAA preseason favorite James Madison, 79-69.
Brigham was a dominant force in the first half, scoring 13 of her 19 prior to intermission en route to leading GW to a five-point edge (21-16) early in the second quarter. The Franklin, Mass., native became the first GW first-year since at least 2004-05 to reach double digits in her first four games, doing so off the bench in each contest.
First-years set the tone in the first 20 minutes as Brigham was joined by Caranda Perea (six points) and Aurea Gingras (five) to combine for 24 of GW's 30 points before halftime. The host Dukes, though, took a five-point edge into the locker room, 35-30.
The second half featured the resurgence of redshirt junior Neila Luma who scored all 16 of her points after halftime, including a strong 8-of-11 day from the free throw line.
Overall, the charity stripe was a huge storyline as JMU paraded its way to 13 free throw attempts in the third quarter alone. Combined with shooting 50% in the frame, the Dukes opened up a 13-point advantage heading to the fourth quarter.
JMU never allowed GW to get closer than 10 from there, but the Colonials fought to the finish, ending the game on an 11-2 run in the final minute thanks to an impressive full-court press.
The Buff & Blue forced 19 JMU turnovers overall, resulting in 23 points. Gingras led the way with three steals as part of an all-around effort with seven points, four rebounds and three assists.
GW will remain on the road for its next contest against crosstown rival Howard on Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
