WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball built a 14-point halftime cushion on Sunday at Burr Gymnasium, only to see the host Howard Bison storm back for a 63-53 victory.
The Colonials came out firing, finishing the first half on an 11-0 run to take a 35-21 lead at intermission. GW held Howard without a point for the final five minutes of the second quarter and had limited the Bison to just 25 percent shooting in the opening stanza.
However, everything flipped in the second half as the Bison started the third quarter on an elongated 13-0 run to cut within one, ultimately tying the game at 40 by outscoring GW, 19-5, in the frame.
The Buff & Blue took a 43-40 lead early in the fourth on a jumper from Caranda Perea, but Howard roared back again with eight straight, taking the lead for good with 6:27 to go in the game.
Junior guard Maddie Loder had her best game of the young season, finishing a point shy of her career high with 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting. No other Colonial reached double figures, but sophomore Essence Brown and first-year Ali Brigham secured 11 rebounds a piece.
Brigham was held to eight points, all in the first half, failing to reach double digits for the first time in her Buff & Blue career.
GW had a tremendous advantage in rebounding, 52-40, thanks to 31 caroms on the offensive end. However, GW hit just 5-of-35 shots (14.3%) after halftime and shot 26.7% for the game.
The Colonials are now scheduled to take the week off from competition for final exams before closing the non-conference slate next Sunday at home against Delaware. Tip is scheduled for 12 p.m.
