Whitney, Gingras team up for 28 points
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball scored six points in the final 20 seconds to cap off a stirring comeback on Sunday afternoon, topping Delaware, 61-56, to finish non-conference play.
Trailing by as many as 11 in the first half, the Buff & Blue whittled the deficit to four, 42-38, entering the final frame, setting the stage for a frantic final 10 minutes. GW found its shooting stroke, hitting eight consecutive shots from the field as part of a 17-5 run in the opening 5:30 of the fourth to take its largest lead, 55-49.
Delaware battled back with seven straight to take a one-point advantage, but GW got a stop and a rebound from first-year Aurea Gingras, who triggered a long outlet pass into the hands of junior Maddie Loder. With just one defender to beat, Loder laid in the fast break bucket against contact with 20 seconds remaining to put the Buff & Blue in front for good.
A pair of stops and four free throws from graduate student Jasmine Whitney salted the game away for GW, who improved to 3-0 at the Smith Center this season.
Whitney and Gingras were the catalysts of the comeback with Whitney scoring 11 of her team-high 16 points in the fourth. The Pitt transfer stuffed the stat sheet with five rebounds, three assists and three steals while playing all but 107 seconds.
Gingras, likewise, saw a lot of run, playing 36:45 and reaching double figures for the first time in her career with 12 points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds and four assists. Loder chipped in nine, including the go-ahead field goal.
GW shot a season-best 40.0% from the floor, but the story of the day was the Buff & Blue's defense, who held the previously unbeaten Blue Hens 40 points below their season average (96.3 ppg), which was the third-best mark in the nation entering Sunday.
The Colonials coaxed 21 UD turnovers that led to 20 points and beat the Blue Hens at their own game with 21 fast break points, also a season high.
GW will now break for the holidays before returning to action on New Year's Day with the A-10 opener at Davidson. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
