Tip scheduled for 2 p.m. from the Bronx
WASHINGTON - GW wraps up the opening weekend of Atlantic 10 play on Sunday at Fordham. Tip is set for 2 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
SEASON OF ACTION: GW is honoring all those who have or are currently serving in the United States Military as part of Military Appreciation week. The Colonials will don special adidas shoes in conjunction with the Veteran Tickets Foundation (Vet Tix), an organization that donates event tickets to current serving military veterans and their families.
ALL-AROUND SHOWCASE: Graduate student Jasmine Whitney showcased her complete package against Davidson with 18 points, seven assists, six steals and five rebounds. She became the first A-10 player with 18p/7a/6s/5r since Saint Louis' Ciaja Harbison (18p/7a/6s/7r) did so at Duquesne on Feb. 13, 2019.
Whitney recorded her 400th career assist on Friday night, and is 14th among active Division I players with 403 career assists while her 4.1 apg is 11th among active players. Thanks to her six swipes Friday, she now leads the A-10 with 2.9 steals per game and is also ranked among the top 10 in free throw percentage (3rd, 95.0), assists (5th, 4.1), A/TO ratio (6th, 2.2) and minutes per game (8th, 34.9).
NO REST FOR THE WEARY: Sunday's tip-off comes just 42 hours following the completion of Friday's game at Davidson. The turnaround is the shortest between consecutive road games for GW since the 2015-16 season when the Buff & Blue played at #15/10 Stanford on Nov. 21 and turned around 41 hours later to play at Fresno State.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN...: Sunday's contest is the second in a stretch of seven road games in nine affairs to open up A-10 play. Beginning Dec. 31, GW will spend 11 of 25 days on the road, including a pair of four-day road swing and two day trips to Richmond. The five-game conference road trip is the first in the history of the A-10 for GW since it joined the league in 1983. GW has not had a road trip of four conference games since 2006-07.
...AND PLAYING THE TOP OF THE LEAGUE: Not only will GW be away from Washington, D.C., it will be challenged early in the A-10 slate, with the first four scheduled opponents all projected to finish in the top four of the league standings: Davidson (t-4), Fordham (t-4), SLU (3) & Dayton (2).
ABOUT THE RAMS: Fordham is coming off a pair of resounding victories, most recently blowing out George Mason, 62-32, on Friday. The win moved the Rams, who are projected to finish in a tie for fourth in the league standings, to 1-1 in league play. Anna DeWolfe, former AAU teammates with GW's Faith Blethen, paces the Rams and the A-10 with 22.2 ppg. Kaitlyn Downey chips in 8.0 ppg and 10.7 rpg, the second-most in the circuit.
Fordham's calling card has been its defense, allowing a league-low 55.2 points per game (22nd nationally). The Rams have also been a tremendous rebounding team this year with a +14.0 rebounding margin that ranks ninth in the nation.
