Whitney posts 400th career assist in all-around performance
DAVIDSON, N.C. - GW women's basketball saw an eight-point lead disappear in the final three minutes on New Year's Day, ceding a game-ending 12-0 run to Davidson in a 66-62 loss to open A-10 play.
The Wildcats' Adelaide Fuller, who had made one 3-pointer all season, hit a desperation corner three as the shot clock expired with 13.2 seconds remaining to put Davidson in front. A turnover on the ensuing possession sealed GW's fate.
The final result marred what was a tremendous burst by the Buff & Blue to take the lead. Trailing by four late in the third quarter, GW went on a 10-0 run bridging the quarter break to assume a 54-48 advantage. The lead grew to eight with four minutes remaining, the largest advantage of the game for either team, before the Colonials were held off the board for the final 4:05.
Graduate student Jasmine Whitney was outstanding all night, posting a monster stat line of 18 points, seven assists, six steals and five rebounds. The 18 points were a GW-best for the grad transfer, while the six swipes matched a career best. Additionally, her seven helpers moved her over 400 for her career, the 14th-most among active Division I players.
Redshirt junior Neila Luma recorded her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds, providing nine and six, respectively, after intermission. Sophomore Mayowa Taiwo and first-year Ali Brigham chipped in seven each as the Buff & Blue frontcourt held a 43-37 edge in rebounding.
GW shot over 40 percent for the second straight game, outshooting the hosts, who were held to 35 percent from the floor. However, the Wildcats canned nine long balls to GW's three to make up the deficit.
The Colonials now face a quick turnaround, traveling to face Fordham on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Bronx. The game will be nationally televised on CBS Sports Network.
