Colonials return to action for first time in eight days
WASHINGTON - After encountering its first cancellation of the season, GW women's basketball will head back on the road to take on (--/RV) JMU on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the game will be aired locally on NBC Sports Washington Plus. The game will also be streamed on FloHoops (monthly subscription required).
SET THE EXPECTATION: Set The Expectation is dedicated to combating sexual and physical violence through raising awareness, giving and serving, education and direct engagement with coaches, students and athletes in high school, collegiate and professional athletic programs.
Founder Brenda Tracy spoke at GW last fall, sharing her story of surviving a gang rape by four football players. After coming forward with her story in 2014, Tracy began traveling the country to share her story and work with college programs to sign the pledge committing programs to making a difference on their campus in combating sexual and physical violence.
Led by Faith Blethen, GW signed the pledge on Monday for the second straight year, signifying we will be part of the solution.
INSTANT IMPACT: First-year Ali Brigham notched a career-best 13 points at Virginia Tech, reaching double figures for the third time in as many games of her young career. Another double-digit effort on Wednesday would make her the first Colonial since Kelli Prange in 2017-18, and the first freshman since at least 2004-05, to post 10+ points in each of the season's first four games.
Entering Wednesday, Brigham is third among A-10 freshmen with her 11.0 ppg and 53.8 field goal percentage.
NATIONALLY-ACCLAIMED DEFENSE: GW's defense was dented at Virginia Tech, but overall is still among the upper echelon in the country. The Colonials continue to lead the A-10 in scoring defense (55.7 ppg) and field goal percentage defense (34.1%), ranking 25th and 35th, respectively, in the nation among teams with at least two games played.
In GW annals, the 18.6% shot by Lincoln was the lowest of the Rizzotti era (since 2016-17) and the lowest recorded since November 21, 2004 (ECU, 17.4%).
A LOOK AT THE DUKES: JMU is 3-1 on the season thanks to victories over Mount St. Mary's, Virginia and most recently, George Mason. The Dukes shot a season-high 53.7% in the 89-70 win over Mason thanks to 30 points from freshman Peyton McDaniel. Overall, JMU has three double-figure scorers, led by Jamia Hazell, who is averaging 15.3 ppg while coming off the bench in all four games. Kiki Jefferson (13.8 ppg) and McDaniel (10.5) also average at least 10 per game.
The Dukes are projected to win the CAA this year with Jefferson (First Team) and Brianna Tinsley (honorable mention) being named to the Preseason All-CAA teams. Jefferson was chosen as the CAA Rookie of the Year last season.
