Brigham, Whitney lead the way with 13 a piece
BLACKSBURG, Va. - GW women's basketball entered Tuesday as the top scoring defense in the nation thanks to back-to-back lockdown performances in a pair of wins to start the season, but ran into a buzzsaw at Cassell Coliseum, falling, 92-57, to --/RV Virginia Tech.
The host Hokies tied the venerable facility's record with 16 3-pointers, and shot 55.6 percent overall. VT jumped out to a 13-0 cushion in the first four minutes and led for the remainder of the game.
GW found its footing as the game moved along, most notably first-year Ali Brigham, who reached double figures for the third time in as many games with a career-best 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Graduate transfer Jasmine Whitney, who cut her teeth at the ACC level at Pitt, poured in 13 as well for her first double-digit effort in Buff & Blue.
Junior Maddie Loder compiled a season-best effort with eight points and four assists in 23 minutes, while first-years Caranda Perea (2 points in 15 minutes) and Piper Macke made their career debuts.
The Colonials finished the game strong, outscoring the Hokies, 21-16, in the final frame, their highest-scoring quarter of the year. GW shot 64% from the floor in the last 10 minutes en route to a season-best 39.3% effort from the field on the day.
GW now turns its attention to a second straight ACC foe, returning home to take on Virginia on Sunday at 2 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
