Taiwo leads fourth quarter charge, finishes with career-high 18 points
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball welcomed over 1,700 kids from the local area for the annual Field Trip Day on Wednesday morning at the Charles E. Smith Center and gave those in attendance a phenomenal lesson in determination and commitment, coming from behind to defeat Duquesne, 65-60.
The Colonials trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half before putting the clamps on the Dukes defensively, limiting the visitors to just seven points in the game's final 16 minutes to erase a 53-42 deficit, finishing the game on a 23-7 run.
The Buff & Blue began their charge with a bucket from redshirt freshman Mayowa Taiwo with 5:25 left in the third, sparking an 11-3 run to close the frame within one possession at 56-53.
A game that had been highlighted by tremendous offense in the opening half turned into a defensive showcase in the fourth with neither team scoring for the first four minutes before Taiwo's and-one layup knotted things up at 56.
GW forced 13 consecutive Duquesne misses to open the fourth, ultimately holding the Dukes without a field goal for over 10 minutes of action. Taiwo gave GW its first lead since it was 4-3 on a layup with 3:51 remaining, and redshirt junior Sydney Zambrotta canned a triple two minutes later to extend the Buff & Blue advantage to 61-56.
Duquesne ended up having the ball down three in the final 15 seconds, but GW forced a missed 3-pointer and Taiwo skied for the rebound, absorbed a foul and drilled both free throws to finish off her career day with 18 points.
The Hanover, Md., native scored seven points in the final frame and also chipped in six rebounds and three assists on the day. Zambrotta reached double digits for the third straight game with 16 points (3-5 3s) and four assists, while graduate student Alexandra Maund tied her best effort of the year with 14, 12 of which came in the opening half.
Neither team could miss to open the game with Duquesne opening up a 28-20 advantage in the first quarter and hitting a 3 on the first possession of the second to quickly go up double digits. GW whittled the deficit down to four at intermission before the Dukes opened things back up again.
Fortunately, the Buff & Blue have become accustomed to double-digit comebacks, registering their fourth such effort in seven wins, three of which have been from 11 points down.
After allowing the Dukes to shoot 61.5% from the field in the first half, the Colonials defense stiffened and held Duquesne to only 24.1% after intermission. GW utilized a 40-20 edge in paint points and a 24-16 advantage from reserves to ultimately wear down the visitors for its first A-10 victory of the season.
GW now hits the road for a pair of challenging road games, beginning on Sunday at defending A-10 champion Fordham at 2 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on CBS Sports Network.
