GW posts lead the way with combined 30 points and 24 rebounds
BRONX, N.Y. - GW women's basketball overcame a rough offensive start to nearly erase a 13-point deficit on Sunday at defending A-10 champion Fordham, but the rally fell just shy in a 53-47 setback.
The Colonials, who at one point trailed 27-14 late in the first half, had the ball with 21 seconds left down by two. A scramble off the inbounds pass led to a scrum and ultimately an offensive foul whistled against GW. The Rams then hit all four of their free throws in the closing seconds to seal the game.
The Rams, just like in last year's matchup, started hot with the first nine points of the game before redshirt freshman Mayowa Taiwo's lay-up got GW on the board three minutes in. Taiwo, coming off a career-high 18 points on Wednesday, backed it up with seven points and a career-best 14 rebounds on the day, eight of which came on the offensive end.
Graduate student Ariel Stephenson scored the final seven points of the first half for GW to help bring the Buff & Blue within 10, 27-17, at intermission.
GW began to gain momentum in the middle of the third stanza with seven straight points as part of a longer 14-5 run that culminated with a layup from graduate student Alexandra Maund, making it 36-35 in the final minute of the frame.
In the fourth, sophomore Kayla Mokwuah connected on three straight shots to give her 10 for the day, joining Maund (13 points) in double digits. Stephenson followed with a stepback jumper in the final minute, cutting the deficit to 49-47. However, GW would get no closer following the sequence with 20 seconds remaining.
The Colonials forward trio of Mokwuah, Maund and Taiwo combined for 30 points and 24 rebounds. The Buff & Blue held a 22-18 edge in points in the paint and a 12-0 advantage in second chance points.
Sitting at 1-2 in league play, GW will now have nearly a week off before returning to action on Saturday with another challenging road matchup at Davidson. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
