Maund and Mokwuah combine for 31 in second half charge
DAVIDSON, N.C. - GW women's basketball nearly overcame a double-digit deficit for the fifth time this season, but Davidson had just enough answers for a 62-55 victory over the Colonials at Belk Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Buff & Blue utilized their advantage in the post to flip the script from a frustrating first half offensively that saw the homestanding Wildcats earn a 29-15 lead at intermission.
First, it was graduate student Alexandra Maund who scored 10 points in the third quarter as part of a 21-point explosion in the frame to draw GW within 44-36 with 10 minutes remaining.
Then, it was sophomore Kayla Mokwuah who authored a personal 7-0 run as part of a nine-point frame in the fourth that brought the Colonials to as close as three, 52-49 with 3:24 remaining.
However, the Wildcats, on the wrong end of a 13-2 run after leading by 14, drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to extend the lead back to nine and seal GW's fate.
Maund led all scorers with a season-high 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting, one off her career high set last year at Yale. The grad transfer reached double digits for the fifth straight game and also tied her season-best with seven boards.
Mokwuah finished with 14 points, 11 after intermission, for her fifth double-figure effort in the last eight games. She also chipped in a team-best eight boards.
GW's inside presence led to a parade to the free throw line in the second half, where the Colonials connected on 15-of-16 in the second 20 minutes and 20-of-24 for the game.
The Buff & Blue entered the game as the second-best 3-point shooting team in the A-10, but hit just 1-of-19 from beyond the arc and shot 32.1 percent overall. Defensively, GW held the league's No. 2 offense to 36.5 percent and eight points below its season average.
The road gets no easier for GW as it faces its second of three straight unbeaten A-10 squads when Dayton visits the Smith Center on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for the Pride Game. The first 200 fans will receive a GW Pride t-shirt and all fans are invited to take part in a pregame Hoopy Hour in the Tin Tabernacle club.
