Maund racks up 16 and four to lead GW
WASHINGTON - Wednesday night saw the A-10 leading Dayton Flyers women's basketball team come to Smith Center with their stingy defense in tow. At 5-0 in conference play and ranking second in the league in both shooting percentage against (32.6) and points per game allowed (50.4), Dayton posed a difficult test for GW.
Grad student Alexandra Maund did what she could in her sixth straight game scoring in double figures for the Colonials, but ultimately the Dayton D proved to be too tough to crack, in a 66-50 defeat for GW.
George Washington trailed 29-21 after the first two quarters of play, with Maund already netting her double-digit total by the intermission. The Yale transfer had 12 of GW's first 21 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field, but the Flyers held the balance of the home squad to 4-of-16 shooting in the first half, including 0-for-5 from three-point range. The Colonials couldn't get much going on the glass either as they saw a 23-10 first half rebounding deficit.
GW attempted a comeback in the third, but just as Dayton's leading scorer, Erin Whalen, opened the contest with a 3-pointer, she netted the first eight points of the second half with back-to-back triples and a cutting lay-in to extend the Flyer lead to 39-21 early in the second. Dayton began the second on a 13-1 run to put GW in a 42-22 hole near the four-minute mark of the third quarter. The Flyers took a 50-31 lead into the final frame, and despite GW's best scoring quarter of the evening in the fourth, the gap was too large to overcome.
Maund went on to pace the Buff and Blue in scoring and rebounding with 16 points and four rebounds, but Whalen and fellow top gun Jayla Scaife showed their All-league credentials for Dayton. The duo combined for 34 points on 12-of-27 shooting (6-of-14 3pt. FG), showing why Dayton will be a tough-out in any tournament come March.
The schedule doesn't provide much reprieve for GDUB as UMass comes to town next. Massachusetts entered Wednesday with a 4-1 A-10 record and 14-4 mark overall before suffering just their second league loss to VCU. Tip time Sunday from the Smith Center is noon, live on ESPN+.
