Mokwuah leads trio in double figures with 12 points
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball held a three-point lead after a strong and entertaining first half of Atlantic 10 play on Saturday afternoon at EagleBank Arena. However, a 20-0 run out of the locker room for George Mason reversed the course of the game and led the Patriots to a 70-60 victory in the conference opener for both teams.
The Buff & Blue clung to a 35-32 edge at the break, buoyed by six 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes, two each from first-year Faith Blethen and redshirt junior Sydney Zambrotta.
But it was the Patriots who came out and drilled each of their first four trifectas, and seven of their first nine shots overall over the opening seven minutes, to score 20 straight points and take a 52-35 lead.
GW eventually found its footing with an 11-4 spurt to finish the frame, aided by a pair of triples from junior Lexus Levy off the bench.
The Colonials closed to within eight on a Mayowa Taiwo layup with 4:09 remaining but could get no closer thanks to Mason's 46% shooting for the day that included nine long balls.
Sophomore Kayla Mokwuah scored six of her team-high 12 points in the fourth quarter, adding a team-best four assists. Zambrotta and graduate student Alexandra Maund pitched in 11 points apiece to give the Colonials a trio in double figures.
Tamia Lawhorne scored 15 of her career-high 22 points for the Patriots in the decisive third-quarter run.
GW now turns its attention to the A-10 home opener and Field Trip Day on Wednesday at 11 a.m. against Duquesne.
