Colonials and Dukes set for 11 a.m. matinee on Wednesday
WASHINGTON - George Washington women's basketball begins its A-10 home slate on Wednesday morning, welcoming in Duquesne for an 11 a.m. tip on Field Trip Day at the Charles E. Smith Center. Admission is free for all who wish to attend.
BENCH BOOST: GW received a season-high 25 points off the bench on Saturday at George Mason, 12 of which came from sophomore Kayla Mokwuah. Saturday's effort marked the second time in three games that the Colonials have received at least 20 bench points (22 vs. American). In the last three games, Mokwuah has accounted for 34 of the team's 51 points from reserves.
POST PRESENCE: GW has seen increased production recently from its two centers in Alexandra Maund and Kayla Mokwuah. Both reached double digits against GMU, doing so in the same game for the first time all year. Maund is averaging 9.5 ppg/6.3 rpg in the last four games with three double-digit efforts, while Mokwuah has posted at least 12 points in three of the last five contests, averaging 10.4 ppg/4.8 rpg in the stretch.
MORE INSIDE ANALYSIS: Maund reached 10 points only 10 times in her career at Yale but has now done so five times in nine games while donning the Buff & Blue. Mokwuah has nearly equaled her double-digit output from last year (7) with six 10+-point performances.
Post play has paid dividends for the Colonials, who are 5-1 when outscoring their opponent in paint points.
THE MAGIC NUMBER: Head coach Jen Rizzotti's recipe for success always stems from her team's defense. This year is no exception as the Colonials are a perfect 6-0 when holding opponents below 37.5% shooting from the floor. However, during the current five-game swoon, GW is yielding 70.2 ppg with opponents shooting 46.5%.
Saturday's game was just the 18th time in 107 games under Rizzotti that GW has yielded 70 points.
A LOOK AT THE DUKES: Duquesne entered league play tied for the best non-conference mark in the circuit at 10-3 but dropped its second straight game in the A-10 opener at home against UMass, 81-77, on Saturday. Prior to the recent two-game skid, the Dukes had won 10 straight games, the longest streak in the A-10 this season. Most of the success has come from the Dukes possessing the league's top offense at 73.5 ppg, including the second-ranked 3-point shooting mark at 35.0% (behind only GW). However, they also surrender 69.0 points per contest, the worst mark in the league.
Laia Sole leads a trio of Dukes in double figures, averaging a team-best 13.5 ppg with Libby Bazelak (13.3) and Amanda Kalin (11.4) also providing more than 10 points per game.
